Known as the "Walleye Capital of the World," this charming lakeside town, located between Toledo and Cleveland, is more than just a fishing enthusiast's paradise; it's a treasure trove of activities waiting to be discovered. Port Clinton blends outdoor excitement with quaint, small-town charm, from its scenic lighthouses and historic sites to the exhilarating water sports and serene natural parks.

1. Go on Fishing Chater in Lake Erie

If you’re an angler, the Walleye Capital of the World should be on your fishing bucket list! The walleye is a freshwater fish and a staple of the local culture and economy in Port Clinton. Anglers flock to the lake for a day of fishing, making booking a fishing charter one of the top things to do in Port Clinton.

We recommend a few fishing charters, including Stinky Pinky and Lured in Fishing Charters, as they offer between 8 hours and up to 3 days of fishing in Lake Erie. Reach out to the captains for more information!

2. Dine at the Local Restaurants

You’ll be happy to find a variety of dining options in Port Clinton for whatever you’re craving. From sports pubs to fine dining, you’re sure to find the perfect seafood menu and even a taste of the local wine. Here are some places you can try.

Jolly Roger Seafood House

From perch, walleye, and breaded chicken sandwiches or tacos to lobster rolls or shrimp power bowls, it’s the perfect spot for lunch.

Orchard Catawba Island

Known for its farm-to-table and seasonal flavors, the Orchard Farm Stand is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the menu includes sandwiches, applewood-fired pizza, burgers, and kid’s menu.

Slaters Madison Street Pub

For those who prefer a family-owned establishment with a laid-back pub atmosphere, Slaters is the place. Its menu includes pub-style classics like fresh jumbo chicken wings, award-winning burgers, and steak dinners.

3. Check out the African Safari Wildlife Park

The African Safari Wildlife Park offers a 65-acre preserve where you can drive through the park to see the wildlife, including alpacas, American bison, Bactrian camels, elk, emu, deer, zebras, and giraffes.

You also have the option to do the walk-thru safari during the open season to see tortoises, porcupines, and African grey parrots, among others. It’s the perfect opportunity for fun for the whole family.

4. Have Fun at the Watering Hole at Monsoon Lagoon

Speaking of fun, one of the best things to do in Port Clinton for the whole family is to spend a day at the Watering Hole at Monsoon Lagoon. It has a ride-thru safari, walk-thru zoo, waterpark, and Montego Bay raceway.

With so many activities—from splashing in Adventure Island Treehouse to getting competitive on the go-karts—this Watering Hole provides different activities the family can pick and choose to participate in.

5. Visit the Catawba Island State Park

Catawba Island State Park, located along the northern coast of Ohio's Marblehead Peninsula, is a must-visit for those who love to do outdoor activities. One of its main attractions is the beautiful sandy beach along Lake Erie.

It provides the perfect beach spot for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking during the warmer months. The park also features picnic areas with tables and grills, making it a great option for family gatherings and BBQ meals.

6. See Put-in-Bay Island

Put-in-Bay is an island in the middle of Lake Erie that makes a fun day trip by catching the ferry, either the Miller Ferry or the Jet Express. It takes about 18 minutes to arrive at Put-in-Bay, and the ferry takes you past Mouse and Starve Islands. Depending on the weather, you might even see Rattlesnake and Keylleys Island in the distance!

We recommend not traveling with your car to the island; instead, rent a golf cart to move around the island. You can also visit Heineman’s Winery and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, or take the family-friendly Put-in-Bay tour train as it takes you through these areas as well as the Lake Erie Island Nature and Wildlife Area.

7. Get a Thrill at Cedar Point Amusement Park

The Cedar Point Amusement Park is home to around 68 rides, including 18 world-class roller coasters. But no worries, there are also rides and attractions for the kids and families to enjoy. There’s also the Cedar Point Shores Waterpark, filled with tall slides to test your courage!

8. Take a Dip at the Beach in East Harbor State Park

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, East Harbor State Park has around 1,800 acres that encompass a sandy beach along the shore, perfect for swimming, kayaking, sunbathing, and picnicking.

There are also hiking and biking trails that take you through forests, wetlands, and meadows for those who like to observe wildlife or birdwatch. Anglers can cast their lines in search of walleye, perch, bass, and other freshwater species, while boaters can enjoy cruising the waters of the lake.

9. Have a Sip of Vino at the Wineries and Vineyards

Did you know there’s a wine scene conveniently located in Kelleys Island, Catawba, and Put-in-Bay? If you prefer to relax and sip a glass of wine, there are a few vineyards that provide you with the opportunity.

You can visit the tasting rooms of Crooked Tree Vineyard, Heineman Winery, or the Gideon Owen Wine Company. The latter also has a restaurant with brunch, lunch, and dinner menus to peruse and enjoy.

10. Explore the Port Clinton Lighthouse

The original Port Clinton Lighthouse, built in 1896, was situated at the entrance of the Portage River. Recently restored and relocated to Waterworks Park, it is a place to visit if you’re in the area and learn about its history. Another option is to visit the Marblehead Lighthouse, which is the oldest operating lighthouse on the American side of the Great Lakes.
